Mary Newell DePalma

 

Mary Newell DePalma has illustrated more than 20 picture books and is the author of seven, including A Grand Old Tree, an IRA/CBC Children’s Choice in 2006.

 

As an author, Mary utilizes a range of literary forms including fable, allegory, nonsense rhyme, and nonfiction. Her illustration experience includes medical, semi-technical, editorial, and picture book illustration. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators.

 

Over the years, Mary has thoughtfully examined her own creative practice, and now enjoys speaking with students about the creative process. Her lively and interactive classroom presentations illuminate the creative process. She engages the students with Visual Thinking Strategies, brainstorming, visualization, movement, and call and response storytelling.

 

In addition to her classroom presentations, Mary has presented family programs at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and The Wenham Museum. Mary participated as a panelist in a NESCBWI/Eric Carle Museum program, and was a featured artist at the Mazza Museum of Picture Book Art Summer Institute. She has presented storytimes for ReadBoston, ReadTV, BATV, the Eric Carle Museum, and many libraries. Her work has been featured as Storywalks along the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston and in the City of Portland, ME. Mary is a Museum Teacher at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, where she has researched, written, and led theme tours of the collection. She has been an adjunct faculty member at the New England School of Art and Design, and Tufts Universitiy/SMFA. She has presented guest lectures at AIB/Lesley University, North Shore Community College, and Montserrat College of Art. Her picture books, published by Houghton-Mifflin, HarperCollins, Arthur A. Levine/Scholastic, and Eerdmans, have been translated into Korean, Japanese, French, and Spanish.

Mary Newell DePalma
